This is the most common issue we see. If your scooter's running flat quicker than it used to — or won't charge at all — it's almost always the batteries. Mobility scooter batteries are typically sealed lead-acid or AGM batteries, and they've got a lifespan of about 12-18 months with regular use. After that, they lose capacity and won't hold charge like they did when new. Sometimes people think it's the charger, but if the charger's light is coming on, the charger's probably fine. We test the batteries properly under load — not just with a multimeter at rest — to see if they're actually delivering power when you need it. If your scooter's a few years old and you're noticing range loss, it's time for new batteries. We stock common sizes and can fit them same-day in most cases.
If your scooter cuts out or slows right down when you're going up a hill or over a kerb, it's usually one of two things. First — and most common — the batteries are getting weak. When you go uphill, the motor draws a lot more current, and if the batteries are old or damaged, they can't deliver the power needed. The voltage sags, and the controller cuts out to protect the battery. Second, it could be a loose connection or corroded terminal. Mobility scooters vibrate a fair bit, and battery terminals can work loose over time. We tighten and clean all connections as part of our standard check. If it's cutting out intermittently, it's almost always a bad connection or a battery on the way out.
Pneumatic tyres (air-filled) on mobility scooters are prone to punctures — especially if you're riding over rough ground, gravel, or areas with bindii. The tyres are usually relatively thin, and it doesn't take much to puncture them. If you're sick of dealing with flats, we can fit solid tyres. Solid tyres are puncture-proof — you'll never get a flat again. The trade-off is they're slightly firmer, so the ride isn't quite as smooth, but for most people, it's worth it for the peace of mind. We fit solid tyres regularly, and customers love them. Another option is to keep the pneumatic tyres but make sure they're inflated to the correct pressure — under-inflated tyres puncture easier and wear faster.
A clicking noise when you press the throttle usually means the motor's trying to engage but not getting enough power. The click is the electromagnetic brake releasing (or trying to). This is almost always a battery or wiring issue. If the batteries are very low or damaged, they can't supply the current the motor needs to turn, so it just clicks. Sometimes it's a blown fuse or a bad connection at the motor. We trace the circuit properly to find where the problem is. Could also be a faulty controller, but that's less common. The good news is this is usually a straightforward fix once we've diagnosed it properly.

Battery replacement costs vary depending on your scooter model and battery type. Most mobility scooters use either one or two 12V sealed lead-acid or AGM batteries. Smaller portable scooters typically cost $150-$250 for battery replacement including fitment. Larger scooters with dual batteries can be $300-$400. We'll always test your batteries first to confirm they actually need replacing — sometimes the issue is something else, and we're not going to sell you batteries you don't need. We'll give you a clear quote before we do any work.
